Bank of Dave: The Loan Ranger has landed on Netflix, a film dramatising the true story of entrepreneurial whizz David Fishwick. Rory Kinnear graces the screen as the beloved community bank owner, but the real-life David Fishwick boasts an extraordinary tale.

The self-made mogul, 53, hails from Lancashire and embarked on the road to success despite leaving school at just 16 without a single qualification. He founded David Fishwick Minibus Sales, building it up to be Britain’s premier minibus supplier.

Responding to the financial struggles of his customers caused by the reluctance of big banks to lend during the 2007-2008 crisis, he took matters into his own hands and established Burnley Savings and Loans. Interestingly, one of his earliest gigs involved working on a construction site for a modest £27.50 per week.

Fishwick’s entrepreneurial spirit saw him restoring vintage cars for resale, dabbling in the trade of affordable apparel, and spinning records as a DJ by night. It was at a nightclub where he charmed his future wife Nicky, playfully challenging her critique of his music selection by offering her to choose a track, provided she scribbled her phone number on the record sleeve.

Decades later, with Fishwick now a household name and married to Nicky for over 30 years, she remains the rock that keeps him anchored despite the swirl of celebrity, reports .

In a heart-to-heart with Lancashire Live, he reminisced: “We have been together over 30 years and I was down yesterday on television and then I was with and I met half a dozen people from the telly.”

“I come home and said to Nicky, ‘I’ve met Simon Cowell or I’ve met this guy or that lady’ or somebody mega famous off the telly.”

He continues: “And she will say, ‘never mind all that nonsense, Dave, do you want corned beef hash or cottage pie for your tea? ‘ And it grounds you immediately.”

Having earned an estimated fortune of around $10 million (£8.2million), he has enjoyed success with numerous business ventures.

A renowned author, he penned Bank of Dave: How I Took On the Banks, a title aimed at inspiring up-and-coming entrepreneurs.
