The best time for buying at hugely discounted prices has been announced.
Savvy commuters can snap up as much as 50% off millions of tickets from Tuesday (January 14) as the government kicks off its annual sale. It will continue until Monday, January 20 and is available on between January 17 and March 31.
UK bargain-hunters are in for a treat, according to Catch A Gem, an online resource that shares insight on the latest discounts and freebies. In their latest reel, a spokesperson declared: ” to Birmingham for £3.20, Birmingham to Bristol for £15, Manchester to Newcastle for just £10, London to Cardiff for £24 – these are prices from the Great British rail sale that happens every single year, and it’s happening again this year.
“The government have announced that they’re going to be slashing the prices of train tickets across the country to get more people out on . To get these prices you can go to the official website at midnight or what you can do is go to trainline or the official train (website) that you get your train tickets from.”
Catch A Gem assued it would be showcasing some of the top deals when the event goes live. The confirms that this rail extravaganza will offer discounts of up to 50% on over two million tickets, covering popular routes operated by nearly all UK train providers, including Transport for Wales and ScotRail.

The government has warned that these offers “will not last long” and there are “only a limited number of tickets, so passengers are being encouraged to snap up these deals quickly if they want to save more on their train fares”. Examples of the discounted fares include London to Edinburgh for £26.15, down from £62.50, Leeds to Manchester Airport for £5.90, reduced from £11.90, and Newcastle to Carlisle for £6, usually priced at £12.
The reel posted by Catch A Gem on detailing the annual rail sale has garnered 690,000 views, 8,171 likes and dozens of comments. It has also been shared over 1,000 times, raising awareness of the cut-price train ticket prices.
One user responded: “I was literally about to book a train ticket so thanks lol.”
Another expressed gratitude for the information, while a third tagged a friend suggesting a trip to Newcastle next week. They added: “…and also with this sale at least I’m not going to pay a lot for train from St Pancreas to Luton”.
However, not everyone was optimistic. One person predicted: “These trains about to be so packed”, a sentiment that resonated with many as the comment received 300 likes.
Last year’s rail sale reportedly “saved passengers around £5.8 million in total”. This year, the government has “tasked the rail industry to deliver an even bigger sale to offer cheaper tickets for passengers and encourage more people to travel by train”.
