With winter often comes increased running costs for our homes, since we can no longer rely on the warmth to heat our homes or dry our clothes quickly after a wash.

Many people are reluctant when it comes to using their tumble dryers due to the high costs it takes to run them.

This clever trick however could reduce drying times by up to half.

Thanks to user @the.cosyclub sharing the easy-to-follow dryer hack, Tik Tok viewers are left with new found insights that could benefit them months to come.

In the brief seven-second clip, titled “watch this if you want to dry clothes 2x quicker”, they suggest throwing a towel into the tumble dryer, along with all your wet laundry to help speed up the drying process.

The caption reads, “Simple but works”.

Homes and Gardens confirmed that the dry towel absorbs excess moisture in the tumble dryer, therefore accelerating the entire process, reports the mirror.

Cleaning expert Laura Avila states that adding a dry towel absorbs the moisture from wet clothes, which reduces the amount of water that the dryer has to remove as it heats up.

Furthermore, the dry towel also helps to create more air space in the dryer by breaking up big bundles of soaking clothes, allowing hot air to circulate more freely, speeding up the drying process.

Though using a tumble dryer can be expensive, air drying your clothes indoors can lead to other hidden factors and costs in the winter.

Excess of moisture in the air can lead to condensation, causing mildew and mould to grow which can have negative effects on your health and home if left untreated.
