He said: “Look who we’ve got running the country, Free Gear Keir, Rachel from Accounts, we’ve got that famous No-Brainer , Mad Miliband the Net Zero Fanatic, and let’s not forget our very own mastermind David Lammy. He’s a proper charmer.”

A video clip of the speech was filmed by a conference attendee who posted it on the social media platform X. Social media users were quick to reply, with one saying: “That is the best political clip of the century, absolutely brilliant and spot on.” Another person shared their view, saying: “Hilarious if it wasn’t so true… god help us…”.

However, not everyone agreed, with one person posting: “All you all do is tear down others. I see no policy, no future plans, no strategy. All I see is a lot of ‘sound & fury signifying nothing’. I’ve heard you described as second hand car salesmen. Hard to disagree after watching this performance. Mockery isn’t government.”

The comments follow the reemergence of a 2018 report by an all-party parliamentary group (APPG) of MPs co-chaired by Wes Streeting, now the Health Secretary, which suggested using the term “grooming gangs” was racist against Muslims. The Labour Party had included the term in its “definition and examples” of Islamophobia, reports .

One of the warnings included in the report likened the referencing of “Asian grooming gangs” to “age-old stereotypes and tropes about Islam”.

Foreign Secretary Mr Lammy claimed on Thursday that the definition is not being used by the government as its position is still “being determined”.

He told Times Radio: “That’s a process that’s underway and we’ve got to wait to see where that comes out, but I’m quite sure that that process will not lead to anything that is an impediment in going after paedophiles, whatever their background, religious background, ethnicity, or the colour of their skin. Very, very clear on that.”
