BBC Call The Midwife fans slam ‘absurd’ storylines as unlikely couple grow closer

viewers questioned the authenticity of some of the storylines on the long running period drama as Rosalind Clifford [played by Natalie Quarry] and Cyril Robinson [Zephryn Taitte] appeared to grow closer.

This is despite him still being married to Lucille Anderson [Leonie Elliott] who is currently in Jamacia. It didn’t take long before fans flooded to X – formerly known as Twitter – to share their thoughts on the show online.

One user fumed: “This show really is getting absurd. Single mothers and a gay man living with nuns, a married black man dating a posh girl, this would never have happened!!! Get back to good story telling and sack your woke writers immediately.”

“What were the beliefs on dating a married man in the 70’s? I know Sister Julienne wont be happy if Rosalind is found out. I know her & Cyril aren’t officially dating yet, but they’re getting closer,” another observed.

A third also took issue with Cyril’s marita status commenting: “I think Cyril and Rosalind could be cute together but I think Cyril needs to divorce first #CallTheMidwife.”

However it wasn’t all naysayers. A fourth viewer asked: “Is there love blossoming for Rosalind and Cyril? Cyril deserves something good. As does Rosalind and they’d be amazing together. #CallTheMidwife.”

Another felt a relationship between the pair would enhance the storytelling, chiming in with: “Rosalind and Cyril being a couple would have so much scope for excellent storytelling, we normally see mixed marriages through the week’s storyline. To have it as a central point would be amazing #callthemidwife.”

Meanwhile a sixth added: “I hope Cyril is going to Jamaica for a divorce. Rosalind is his equal in every single way!! #CallTheMidwife #Cryrilind”

The burgeoning romance between the pair was first intiated in the recent Christmas Special and their connection has only continued to grow after Rosalind began volunteering at the homeless shelter Cyril helps out at.

Sadly for Rosalind, the end of the episode saw Cyril taking extended leave from work to visit Lucille in Jamaica, putting any potential romance on ice for now.

Tonight’s episode (January 12) also saw Popular struck with an outbreak of STI’s after a construction foreman organised trips to the brothel for hs employees.

This forced Miss Higgins [Georgie Glen] and the other medics to do some detective work to find patient zero while treating everyone afflicted. Meanwhile Violet Bucket [Annablle Apison] was getting set to say farewell to her position as Mayor of Poplar.

However, before she could hand back her chain of office, she got news that the incoming Mayor was ill and unable to take office meaning she had to decide if she would undertake another term.

Call the Midwife airs on Sundays from 8pm on One or catch up on iPlayer.
