Arsenal player ratings (4-3-3)
David Raya: 6
Was on his toes to keep out a long-range effort from Kobbie Mainoo midway through the first half. Was barely tested and couldn’t do much to stop Fernandes’ effort. Pulled off a fine save to deny Joshua Zirkzee in extra-time.
Jurrien Timber: 6
Tried to support the attack and get balls into the box. Cleared his lines when he needed to but didn’t sparkle at either end.
William Saliba: 6
Composed in possession as always as he looked to knock the ball around. Was exposed for the opening goal as Gabriel ran hard to get back. Had less to do after United were reduced to 10 men.
Gabriel: 5
Attempted to cause chaos around Bayindir every time the Gunners had a set-piece. Failed to clear the ball in the lead-up to the goal as he slipped and allowed Garnacho to race forward. Made up for the error with the equaliser.

Myles Lewis-Skelly: 6
Looked assured in the early stages as he held off Garnacho and got his side playing in the right direction. But didn’t challenge for a header in the build-up to United’s opener. Has fitted in well in the Gunners defence and should have a big career ahead of him.
Martin Odegaard: 7
Attempted to pull the strings for the attack. Posed a huge threat around the edge of the area when he got on the ball. Lovely flick in the build-up to Martinelli’s disallowed goal but shot high and wide with a free-kick on the stroke of half time. Was ’s best player but will be disappointed to see his penalty saved in normal time. Did hit the back of the net with his effort in the shootout, however.
Jorginho: 5
Held his position in the centre of the pitch and pinged balls forward to get his side moving. Sloppy at the start of the second half, however, as he passed the ball straight to . Would have taken a penalty if he had stayed on.
Mikel Merino: 5
Protected his backline on the edge of the box and blocked an effort from Mainoo at the end of the first half. Had a limited impact on the game, however, and failed to get a clean strike off when presented with an opportunity in the box midway through the second half.
Don’t miss… [COMMENT] [QUOTES]
Gabriel Jesus: 6
Whipped in a delicious cross midway through the opening period heaped on the pressure. Went down under a heavy challenge from Lisandro Martinez just before the half-hour mark. Was eventually taken off on a stretcher 10 minutes later after a clash with .
: 3
Fluffed his lines with a big chance right in front of the goal just after the visitors had gone ahead as he fired wide. Then wasted another huge opportunity at the end of the 90. Was neat and tidy on the ball but wasn’t dangerous in front of goal and isn’t the man to fire to silverware in any competition. Missed in the shootout.
Gabriel Martinelli: 3
Finished well when through on goal midway through the first half, but the effort was chalked off as he had strayed offside. Lacked the impetus to make things happen during normal time but pushed continued to work hard in attack in extra-time.
Substitutions
Raheem Sterling: 4
Came on in the place of Gabriel Jesus five minutes before half time. Barely posed a threat and his best days are clearly behind him.
Declan Rice: 6
Came on in the second half and should have scored after being left with a free header six yards out. Was thwarted by Bayindir at the end of the 90. Had another chance at the start of extra-time.
Leandro Trossard: 5
Came on at the start of extra-time and almost got on the end of a cross from Havertz. Fired well off target from the edge of the box.
Thomas Partey: 6
Entered the action 10 minutes into extra-time. Delivered a teasing cross as his side pushed for a winner.
: 6
Came on with seven minutes of extra-time remaining.
