A expert has urged Brits to check their change as your little 2p coin could be worth a whopping £1k.

Taking to , , who has over 160,000 followers, advised those with 2p coins in their to check if they bear two very special signs that could mean the little pieces of bronze are highly valuable.

One requirement is that the 2p coin must say ‘New Pence’ on the front, while on the reverse side it must have the date 1983.

Thecoincollectoruk said: “What you want to be checking for on your 2p coin is when you flip it over if it has the date 1983 and on the front of the coin it also says ‘New Pence’.

In 1983 the Royal Mint accidentally minted New Pence coins with the date 1983.

He said: “Between 1971 and 1981 the Royal Mint minted two pence coins to celebrate the introduction of the new 2p. These were very highly minted in the millions and even hundreds of millions in some cases.”

However, your chance of finding such a special coin is slim as “it is believed there are less than a thousand of these that can actually be found.”

The coin expert added: “The 1983 version was only found in some sets and it is believed there are less than a thousand of these that can actually be found.

“The average selling price of one of these at auction tends to be around the £800-1k mark.”

The coin expert advises those lucky enough to find the special 2p coin to sell it at an auction.
