Ocean Cay is in the Bahamas
Today, we see many cruise lines including Disney and Royal Caribbean that have their own islands across the region which generates revenue for the countries who lease their land and charge port fees.
MSC signed their 100-year lease on Ocean Cay in the Bahamas, back in 2015.
The manmade island was dregded from the sea by the Dillingham Coroporation to mine sand back in the 1960s, around 40 years later there were plans to turn the site into a natural gas plant but it didn’t work out and the area was later abandoned.
Despite it being completely covered in waste, the cruise line saw the island as an “opportunity.”
