Liverpool ‘break the bank’ for new Virgil van Dijk contract with captain set to stay

has reportedly taken one step closer to signing a contract extension with .

Van Dijk, much like team-mates and , is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

As things stand, the trio would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a club outside of England, but according to reports, Van Dijk only has eyes fro .

Reports from Van Dijk’s native Netherlands suggest are willing to ‘break to bank’ and tie the defender down to a new deal.

It’s claimed by that a deal is believed to be imminent for Van Dijk, who joined in January 2018.

Exactly how much are willing to splash on Van Dijk’s renewal isn’t yet known, but it could be a jump on the current six-figure sum he’s earning.

The colossal defender is currently pocketing a cool £220,000 per week at Anfield, as per Capology, and would no doubt want similar, if not improved, terms in order to pen fresh terms.

Manager has been quizzed about the ongoing contract sagas at all season, but the Dutchman doesn’t think the off-field talks are impacting their performances on it.

Speaking earlier this week, he stated: “I talk with my players, if there’s anything worrying them they share it with me.

“I am not focused on social media posts or what people are saying. If you do that as manager you will have no life, because people are always talking about us.

“If misses a penalty against Real Madrid he’s distracted by his ‘contract situation’. If Trent doesn’t play well he’s distracted by his ‘contract situation’.

“If everybody plays well, nobody is distracted by their ‘contract distraction’.”
