Cameras caught former President Barack Obamalaughing at something President-elect Donald Trump said during former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral on Thursday.
The two men were seated next to each other at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., talking before Carter’s funeral officially started. Trump leaned in to say something to Obama, who listened before laughing and smiling as Trump continued to speak into Obama’s ear.
Obama’s reps did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
All living former presidents gathered for Carter’s funeral, including former President George W. Bush, who lightly tapped Obama on the stomach as he walked by to get to his seat. Bush didn’t acknowledge Trump, however. Social media users are evaluating all the seemingly mundane moments among the former presidents and vice presidents.
“I would pay a lot of money to hear this conversation,” one person wrote on social media about Obama and Trump’s conversation.
Others suggested it looked like Obama was laughing politely.
During his speech at the Democratic National Convention in August, Obama called out Trump’s “childish nicknames,” “crazy conspiracy theories,” and his “weird obsession” with crowd sizes while making a suggestive hand gesture.
Trump has long fueled a conspiracy theory that Obama is not a natural-born citizen of the U.S.
Carter’s funeral marked the first time Trump and his former Vice President Mike Pence were together publicly since the 2021 insurrection when Trump encouraged his supporters to storm the Capitol as they shouted they wanted to hang Pence. Trump and Pence shook hands when they saw each other at the funeral, but Pence’s wife, former second lady Karen Pence, appeared to snub Trump, remaining seated and not shaking his hand.
