The former and host has revealed his favourite car that he drove during his time on the programmes.

The automotive expert travelled the world during the 22 years he was involved with the pair of , often tasked with buying interesting models on a budget and driving them on .

In a recently posted to the YouTube channel, Richard highlighted that his favourite car that featured on TV was Oliver – a that he still owns.

He said: “The winner is, and I’ve reached this through logic and thought so it’s undeniably the winner, it’s Oliver. I can hear massive applause. It’s Oliver, it has to be.

“Simply, he encapsulates what the car does for us – it enables us to go about our lives. And he still lives, and I’m personally really delighted that I’ve worked that through, genuinely sifting through every single one of the previous winners to arrive at the ultimate winner – my best ever TV car is was and always shall be Oliver.”

Originally bought in 2007 for the Top Gear Botswana Special, Oliver the Opel quickly gained ridicule from fellow presenters and James May for its age and underpowered 1.0-litre engine.

Nevertheless, the little saloon managed to complete the journey across the spine of Africa, including the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, without any major modifications and only two breakdowns.

After the journey was completed, Richard decided to import Oliver to the UK, restoring the model to showroom condition in an episode of his Discovery TV programme Richard Hammond’s Workshop.

Richard also had fond memories of a number of other cars he used on Top Gear and The Grand Tour, including a particularly characterful Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 that he bought for the price of a new family saloon.

He said: “There’s the Ferrari 308 GT4 from when we bought supercars for the price of Ford Mondeos. I loved that little car and I sold it, and I wish I’d just kept it.

“I loved it because it was quirky. It’s a mid-engined Ferrari and that’s not something I normally like, but it was gorky and I adored it.”

Nevertheless, the video revealed that there were some models that Richard hated using, including a 1970s Toyota Land Cruiser that had a wide variety of faults, including a venomous spider hiding inside.

He added: “The Toyota Land Cruiser from the Bolivia Special. I love an old Land Cruiser, but I hated that one. It had no clutch or brakes, and it had a deadly spider in it.

“If you watched an earlier video, you’ll remember the story. Suffice to say, I spent eight hours in that car in the company of a lethal spider, driving through the night, not even on camera.”
