Stuart Hogg has been sentenced to a community payback order after pleading gulity to abusing his estranged wife over a period of five years.

The former Scotland captain admitted a single charge of domestic abuse in November and was sentenced at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Thursday morning.

His community payback order also came with one year of supervision and a five-year non-harassment order against his estranged wife.

Hogg, who currently plays for Montpellier, admitted to abusing his wife at locations including Exeter, Hawick and Beasden between 2019 and 2024.

He admitted to shouting and swearing, tracking her movements and sending her messages which were alarming and distressing in nature.

The court previously heard that Hogg berated his wife for ‘not being fun’ after going on drinking binges with his colleagues. At one point, he sent in excess of 200 text messages ‘in a few hours despite having been asked to leave her alone’.

The charge also involved Hogg tracking his estranged wife’s movements via the Find My Phone app following their split in 2023.

Hogg won exactly 100 caps for Scotland between 2012 and 2023 and scored 27 tries for his country, putting him third on the all-time list behind only Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe.

He excelled at international level, being named Six Nations Player of the Tournament in 2016 and 2017. He was also selected to tour with the British and Irish Lions on three occasions, winning his only two caps in 2021.

Hogg was awarded an MBE for his services to rugby union in 2023 before coming out of retirement to sign a two-year contract with Montpellier.
