Condensation can be a pain when you’re trying to get somewhere
During cold weather, frosty windscreens isn’t the only thing you need to worry about. When the car heats up, the warm and moist air from the car’s interior hits the cold windows, and this can cause water particles in the air to cool and condense into liquid – causing condenstion to form on the windows.
In a vehicle, this can look like fog from a driver’s perspective, and it needs to be cleared before you drive. Drivers for driving with a misty windscreen, and could even be slapped with there penalty points on their licence. However, a more hefty fine of £2,500 could be issued if the steamed-up windscreens have led to an accident.
There are several ways of getting rid of in your car, including using the heater on the windscreen, or in the car by making sure the air is coming from outside the vehicle, not recirculated. But there’s an even more simple hack that can stop condensation forming in the first place using something you already have in your fridge.

Online content creator Darissa, who often shares life hacks on her account @darissa.hacks, shared that all you need is a potato. “A car hack I wish I knew sooner,” she captioned her video. “This hack will keep water off your car windows during this tough weather.”
In the video, she could be seen running a potato, which has been cut in half, all across the outside of the windscreens of the car. In order to make sure this hack works, you need to make sure you’re using a clean potato, so you might have to give it a clean first.
Then simply use the flat side to rub along the window, making sure to cover the entire area. This method should effectively clean the window and create a barrier that prevents condensation.
If you notice any starchy streaks, simply wipe them off promptly. Also, if you’re planning to treat all your vehicle’s windows, you might need to use both halves of the potato.
After application, let it dry completely without interference. Once the potato juice has dried, your windows should remain fog-free. This is due to the starch in the potato forming a shield between the glass and the air.
In the comment section, people couldn’t wait to try, with one person saying: “Genius car hack.” Another simply said: “Good idea.” And a third wrote: “That’s a genius car hack, getting easy for the season. Thank you for sharing your experience.”
