Inside Bank of Dave’s Rory Kinnear’s life including father’s fatal filming accident

Bank of Dave is coming back to Netflix with a second instalment called The Loan Ranger after the first film gained national attention in 2023. The films are based on the a self-made millionaire.

Rory Kinnear plays the title character and he is a 46-year-old English actor and theatre star known for his other role as Bill Tanner in the James Bond films. Born in Hammersmith, London, he grew up with famous parents – actor Roy Kinnear and actress Carmel Cryan.

Roy played Henry Salt in the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, while Carmel was known for playing Brenda Boyle in . Rory also grew up with two older sisters, Karina and Kirsty.

His extended family includes more famous faces as he is the grandson of Scottish international rugby union and rugby league player Roy Kinnear, and the godson of actor Michael Williams.

His personal life has seen numerous losses, most recently being the death of his sister Karina in May 2020. She died from at the age of 48.

Karina suffered a lack of oxygen at birth that caused severe brain damage and she needed care throughout her life, but she was by no means one to give up.

At the time of her death, Rory told The Guardian: “No one could describe Karina as weak: she did not have it coming, she was no more disposable than anyone else.

“Her death was not inevitable, does not ease our burden, is not a blessing. She was vulnerable, yes. She needed the care of others to live. I will remain for ever grateful to the hundreds of caregivers who have, at one point or another, looked after her with such kindness and dedication, some of whom have maintained a relationship with her long after their retirement.”

More than 30 years ago, his dad Roy died after being thrown from a horse while filming The Return of the Musketeers in Spain.

He had dreaded the scene, which involved him having to charge at speed across a cobbled bridge, due to his lack of horsemanship.

Rory was just 10 when his dad died and he recalled how Roy had been nervous before the shoot. He said: “He wrote a letter to my mum just before he set off, saying, ‘just about to do a stunt that even the stuntmen have said is too dangerous’. They all knew, and yet the shot was still prioritised over the safety of actors.”

Rory became a patron of the Mark Milsome Foundation (MMF), a charity dedicated to supporting young people wanting to enter the industry and carrying out research into health and safety.

He told the in 2023: “You’ve got a lot of young people wanting to enter an industry that they know is perilous, both financially and in terms of work, but not necessarily aware of how perilous the practices on set are as well.”

Rory himself opened up about how he too came “close to death” on set as he told The Guardian: “I inadvertently rubbed the milky residue of a toxic cactus plant into my eye while filming Women In Love in the desert in Namibia, and my body went into anaphylactic shock as the producer sped me to a clinic 50 miles away.”

Rory is engaged to actress Pandora Colin, daughter of the 5th Baron Harlech. They have a son, Riley, and a daughter called Hope.
