is set to increase its drop-off fee to a whopping £6 for 10 minutes as the authorities claimed that it will “encourage public transport use”. The new charges will come into effect from January 13 and will cover the cost of using the pick-up and drop-off area in a car.

This currently costs £5 for the first 10 minutes, after a previous increase from £4 in July 2023.

A statement from the said that the rise will “mean that use of the area will be competitively priced against public transport’- which around 37 percent of passengers already use”.

It added: “Our Surface Access Strategy seeks to grow that number further while reducing the emissions caused by transport to and from the airport.

“Revenue raised will assist in improving passenger experience, growing connectivity and investing in the airport’s infrastructure.”

Gail Taylor, chief commercial officer (XAero) at Edinburgh Airport, said: “We have just had a record year for passengers at Edinburgh Airport and that number is likely to grow year-on-year, and we want to make sure that people are making more sustainable choices when getting to and from the airport.

“The use of cars is the most polluting mode with four journeys for each passenger compared to just two when using public transport. We want more people to use the robust transport links we have as this both reduces emissions and congestion.

“We have a number of large capacity projects planned over the next few years and reinvestment back into the airport infrastructure will improve the overall experience for passengers.”

However, the decision has left many unhappy.

A user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Edinburgh Airport to raise drop-off fee to £6 for 10 mins to ‘reduce emissions’. What utter bullsh*t, just a license to print money, it’s a total rip off.”

A second user commented: “We are getting rinsed more and more at airports.”

A third user said: “Not sure how I’m to get public transport in the wee small hours from the other side of the country, requiring two changes of bus or train, with all my luggage and several kids in tow. They should just admit it’s a money making scam since we all see that’s what it is.”
