Dyer is encouraging Brits to get down to their boozer
Despite over a third of Brits planning to shun the pub this January in favour of health and fitness goals, actor Danny Dyer is championing the ‘Pack Our Pubs’ initiative, urging people to visit their local watering holes.
Statistics reveal that more than 400 pubs permanently shut their doors in 2024, with the total number of UK pubs dropping below 39,000 for the first time on record and the industry is now bracing for a sigificant dip in sales as 21% plan a pub hiatus.
The latest initiative will offer free pints of crisps to anyone buying an alcohol-free beverage during January at 200 participating pubs across the UK.
In collaboration with Walkers, former star Danny Dyer, who portrayed Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter, is supporting encouraging more Brits to make a trip down to the pub. Setting an example by serving up pints of crisps at The Chancellors on Crisp Road in Hammersmith, London.
“The local boozer is important, helping keep the community together,” said the TV personality. “For some pubs, January is a really tough time and could be the final straw.”
He continued: “Fair play to those having a go at the Dry January challenge this year, it’s a great thing to do for your health – mind and body. But you can still get down to the local with your mates, even if you’re off the booze.”
“How sad would you be if your local had to close down?” he said.

The primary motivations for Brits to participate in Dry January include enhancing physical health, saving money, and establishing a positive habit for the new year. A quarter of participants are simply intrigued to see if they can rise to the challenge.
A significant 75% believe that it’s entirely feasible to enjoy a pub visit without consuming alcohol with seven out of ten having successfully done so in the past.
Despite this a quarter suggested that a broader range of non-alcoholic options would make the task easier. And 14% would like to see events tailored to non-drinkers, and positive messaging around sobriety.
Interestingly, healthier snack options at pubs would make abstaining from alcohol easier for 18% of respondents.
Cynthia Finke, a spokesperson for Walkers, commented: “It’s much easier to stick to your goals if you’re able to have fun at the same time,” adding that supporting the pub industry simultaneously is an added bonus.
