Channel 4 Patience viewers give up ‘after 10 minutes’ as they fume over ‘rip off’ drama

Channel 4’s latest drama, titled Patience, left viewers divided as they tuned in to watch the second instalment on Thursday night. The six-part series follows a police investigation and how an autistic woman named Patience Evans (played by Ella Maisy Purvis) helps to solve it.

Detective Inspector Bea Metcalf (Laura Fraser) recognises Patience’s unique insight and takes her under her wing, integrating her into a police team operating on the frontline.

In the first two episodes, the pair try to connect the dots after a man dies suddenly, and they’re convinced that a third party is involved.

However, while some viewers love the new series, others are less than impressed and feel it is a “rip-off” of the French drama Astrid.

Taking to X to share their thoughts, one complained: “#Patience is a copy of the French drama, which is amazing. Astrid, Murder in Paris. While #Patience is okay, it’s a far cry from the original. Not very inventive of @Channel4.”

Another agreed: “@Channel4 new series #Patience..is it a rip off from Walter Present’s Astrid.”

Someone else added: “Did Channel 4 #Patience literally plagiarise the plot of episode 1 of #Astrid and somehow the character herself? Or am I bonkers?”

“Ah, I see Channel 4 is trying to do a pale imitation of France’s superb #AstridEtRaphaelle with #Patience. I think I’ll give it a miss. Can’t come up with your own ideas?” a fourth viewer stated.

Another echoed: “#Patience on Channel 4 started well but it seems very similar to the #WalterPresents French drama #Astrid Will stick with it for the York scenery..”

Other viewers gave up after 10 minutes, with one tweeting: “OMG, they’re literally the SAME STORIES? Yeah, no. Thought I’d give it 10 minutes. Awful. #Patience.”

However, not everyone shared the same opinion as one fan praised: “What an incredibly interesting & believable character Patience is. She’s got me hooked! Great acting by @ellamaisypurvis.”

The synopsis for the third episode, which airs next Wednesday, reads: “The team are baffled when a young woman is found dead among the dinosaur display at a museum.

“The investigation leads them into the shadowy world of fossil smuggling, and Patience makes a startling deduction. Meanwhile, Detective Bea delves deeper into the world of neurodiversity and recognises parallels with her own family.”

Patience is available to watch on All4.
