Tony Mathews has died aged 81.
Tony Mathews has died aged 81 after undergoing surgery, according to reports. The actor enjoyed a career spanning several decades and became known for his roles in The Bill, Inspector Morse and Poirot.
An inquest into his death will be held in Kent.
Tony grew up in Canterbury, Kent, and launched his career when he landed a role in Ridley Scott’s 1977 war film, The Duellists.
From there, Tony appeared in The Dogs of War (1980), Remembrance (1982) and Dance With a Stranger (1985).
Five years later he starred in Poirot – the hit ITV series that ran from 1989 to 2013. He played businessman Gerald Lowen and worked alongside David Suchet as the titular detective, reports.

Tony played a pathologist in Inspector Morse in 1992 and starred in episodes of ITV’s The Bill from 1990 until 1993. The popular police drama broadcast on ITV from 1984 until 2010.

Roberta – who was best known for playing Gina Gold in the police drama and Irene Raymond in – died in July aged 76.
The actress died from an infection caused by a fall two months prior which agitated her underlying health problems with pneumonia. According to The Guardian, she also suffered from emphysema.
She is survived by her actor husband Peter Guinness, her son Elliott, a granddaughter and two stepbrothers.
According to the Daily Mail, the 76-year-old left behind a whopping £1million in her will.
The outlet says she left an estate valued at £945,145. Her Cartier watch and jewellery would go to her son while the rest of her estate should go to her husband.
Tributes poured in for Roberta online as fans offered their condolences to the late actress.
One person penned: “Heartbreaking news. RIP Roberta Taylor, one of the finest actors this country has ever seen. Thinking about her family, friends and fellow fans.”
Another wrote: “Sad news about the passing of Roberta Taylor. Gina Gold was one of my favourite TV characters growing up and I still think of her one liners, some well needed comic relief in what could be a pretty heavy episode.”
A third penned: “RIP Roberta Taylor. Gina Gold was one of my all time favourite characters from The Bill. Superb actress. Sleep Well.”
