Award-winning money influencer Chloe Carmichael, known as , shared five tips and products to keep costs down in collaboration with , a heating technology company.

It comes as energy regulator increased the price cap by 1.2% on January 1, raising bills for households on standard variable tariffs, as well as decision to scrap  

Use heated products to heat you, not the home

Chloe trialled turning off heating for an entire weekend in using electric heated products such as a throw, duvet or mattress topper, and saved £6.75 that weekend alone.

However, she said to keep in mind that Government recommends 18C as the minimum temperature for households.

Draught proof windows and doors

Chloe recommended checking around windows and doors for any gaps which could be sealed, and to consider adding a curtain in front of the door using a tension rod, which you could even clip a thermal lining onto.

Check your tariff

She noted that checking your energy tariff can make sure you’re using it efficiently.

For example, if you’re on an Economy 7 tariff, you’ll have cheaper electricity rates during the night and more expensive rates in the day.

If you decide to move supplier, it’s also worth checking if it has a refer a friend scheme so you can both get a little monetary bonus.

Close curtains and blinds

Keeping your curtains and blinds closed when your heating is on could help keep the heat in, and keep your house warm. She added that closing doors will help to trap heat.

Lower your thermostat temperature

She said that lowering your thermostat by even one or two degrees can make a noticeable difference to your heating bill.

Chloe added: “A lot of thermostats nowadays link to apps on your phone, making it easier than ever to set a schedule for your heating – it’s been a game changer for me to easily manage my heating.”
