Social media users responded with a stark reminder after House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) positively talked up Tuesday about the speed and relative ease with which Congress had a day earlier certified President-elect Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory over Democratic rival Kamala Harris.
“We trudged through the snow yesterday to certify the election and that went off without a hitch,” Johnson, who narrowly won reelection to the top House role last week, told the media during a press conference.
“38 minutes to certify the new president,” he continued. “That might be a record, I’m not sure, but it went off well.”
The Republican Voters Against Trump group shared footage of Johnson’s comments on X, formerly Twitter.
“Mike Johnson brags about how fast the election certification was yesterday,” it captioned the clip.
Commenters pointed out how the certification of President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory over then-POTUS Trump was only delayed (for hours) after Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in their failed bid to overturn the result.
