Stephen Colbert Gives Trump Supporters A Serious ‘Reality’ Check About Jan. 6

Stephen Colbert highlighted the upside-down reality Donald Trump has created for his supporters as the “Late Show” host reflected on the fourth anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.

Colbert noted that Trump has whitewashed and recast the deadly attack on the U.S Capitol as a “day of love.”

“Yes, on Jan. 6, love was in the air,” Colbert cracked. “Also, bear spray.”

“By reinstalling Donald Trump, we are stepping right through the Orwellian looking glass,” he added. “With Trump, hate is love, violence is peace. Nugget is food.”

“And while most Americans exist in something called — and I hope I’m pronouncing this correctly — reality, Trump’s total whitewashing of the insurrection has convinced his base that the coup was no big whoop,” he went on.

He cited a December 2023 Washington Post poll in which 28% of respondents said they believed Jan. 6 protesters were “equally peaceful and violent.”

“That makes no sense!” Colbert exclaimed. “‘Officer, I’m violent and peaceful. Yes, I stabbed him 20 times, but in my defense, I pulled the knife out 19 times.’”
