Alien: Romulus, the latest chapter in the iconic Alien saga, has been making waves with one of its stars securing a nomination for the esteemed BAFTA Rising Star Award 2025. Directed by the acclaimed Fede Alvarez, this spine-chilling new entry has garnered critical acclaim, being described as “sheer terror” and “utterly breathtaking”.

The plot synopsis teases an intense encounter: “While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young colonisers come face-to-face with the most relentless and deadly life form in the universe.”

David Jonsson, who portrays Andy, expressed his elation over his BAFTA nod, calling it “bonkers”.

Ridley Scott, the visionary behind the original Alien and subsequent titles Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, serves as a producer on this project, working alongside Michael Pruss and Walter Hill. Alien: Romulus is set to introduce audiences to a fresh narrative arc, distinct from any previous films in the franchise.

Variety praised the film’s new creatures and characters, saying they are “tense enough to grab you by the throat”. For those eager to watch, here’s what you need to know.

Disney+ will add Alien: Romulus to its streaming lineup on January 15.

Moreover, the film has already premiered on Hulu since November 2024. This digital debut comes after the movie’s initial release on Prime Video and Apple TV.

The seventh installment, released in theaters in August, debuted at the top of the box office, raking in $41.5 million – the second-highest opening in the Alien franchise’s history.

Typically, Disney Plus adds new TV episodes or movies at 12am US time or 8am UK time.

The film earned a perfect five-star rating from The Evening Standard, with The Times hailing it as “The best alien film since the Ridley Scott original”.

Other critics praised the film, including Radio Times, who called it “A tense and engaging spectacle”, and Culture, who described it as a “Clever, gripping and sometimes awe-inspiring sci-fi chiller”.

In a nostalgic move, the film even had a limited VHS release, marking the first time an Alien movie has received an official VHS release since 2004’s Alien vs. Predator.

This also marked the first VHS release of a major film since 2006.
