A fat loss coach issued a stark warning to cereal lovers, claiming it’s the “worst breakfast you can eat” if you’re serious about shedding pounds.

Thomas, who shares his advice on as @thomasjwhitehead, acknowledged cereal is a popular choice because it’s “quick, easy, and the kids have it,” but insisted there’s “nothing worse”.

But why is this staple breakfast item so detrimental?

Holding up a box of cereal, he explained: “One tiny 30g bowl serving is 119 calories, 11 grams of sugar, and only 1.8 grams of protein. No one, since the history of mankind, has only had the recommended serving of 30g, which means you’re easily consuming three times that – 360 calories, 33 grams of sugar, first thing in the morning.”

So what are the implications of this?

Firstly, Thomas cautioned you’ll experience a “have a massive energy drop about mid-afternoon,” and secondly “you’re gonna be f***ing starving,” leading to potential unhealthy snacking throughout the day.

Thomas emphasised for those “serious” about shedding fat as fast as possible, you’ll “preferably want a high-protein option with some fibre”. Yet, not everyone is on board with his advice.

A concerned mother commented: “I’d love to stop my daughter having cereal but need quick breakfast ideas before school.”

The NHS stated: “Whether it’s a quick bite before school or something more fancy at the weekend, a healthy breakfast is a great way to start any day.

“Mornings can be busy when you have a family to feed, but our easy breakfast ideas are perfect for kids and adults alike.”

Some recommendations for are:

  • Baked tomatoes on toast (5 mins prep, 15 mins cooking)
  • Blueberry and banana smoothies (5 mins prep)
  • Breakfast fruit salad (10 mins prep)
  • Easy overnight oats (10 mins prep)
  • Super scrambled eggs (5 mins prep, 10 mins cooking)
  • Toasted oats with yoghurt and fruit (10 mins prep, 2 mins cooking)
  • Carrot and sultana mini pancakes (10 mins prep, 10 mins cooking)

While cereal does come with its perks, being often fortified with vitamins and a source of calcium when paired with milk, sticking to a 30g serving means it can still fit into a healthy, balanced diet.

Those finding it tough to manage their diet should consider consulting their GP.
