There’s a rule you need to follow (stock image)
Even if you think you’re an expert behind the wheel, there’s some knowledge out there that might just upgrade your game.
For example, driving instructor Annie Winterburn admitted many motorists actually make a big mistake regarding gear changes. The driving guru emphasised the importance of adhering to a “golden rule”, which is often overlooked.
Once you get to grips with it, she said you’ll actually go a long way, and your understanding of driving will become easier. It’s a simple rule to learn too.
Particularly when tackling a steep hill, Annie advises shifting down a gear, stating: “The lower gears in your car, they’ll send more power to your wheels. Lower gears are kind of the most powerful gears. As you speed up, you can go into higher gears.”
Once you know that lower gears can boost wheel power and provide “engine braking” for a natural slowdown, she said you’ll be able to answer a wide variety of questions in your theory test.

Annie added: “The only time you use a higher gear is when you’re driving on ice.” If you drive an automatic car, and need a lower gear, she said the best thing to do is use kickdown.
By pressing the pedal all the way down, the car will automatically go down into a lower gear. According to the expert, this is the best way to manage it.
The video has been viewed over 1,000 times since it was shared, and people were quick to comment too. Many thanked her for the handy tips.
One person said: “I just passed my theory test 46/50 thanks to your videos.” Another chimed in with: “Annie, you are the best teacher.”
A third also added: “Hello Annie. I’ve passed my theory test this morning 50/50 after discovering your account just the other day. Your videos were so helpful for last minute revision, so thank you so much!”
