Donald Trump announces he will rename the Gulf of Mexico as he warns of new tariffs

US President-elect set out some of the major policies he wants to implement over the next four years during a press conference held on January 7.

While addressing Washington DC’s future foreign policy and how he will tackle immigration, Mr Trump said he is planning to rename the Gulf of Mexico.

Speaking from Mar-a-Lago in Florida, he said: “We’re going to be changing the name of the , which has a beautiful ring. A lot of character.

“The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country. They can stop them.

“And we’re on Mexico and Canda because they come through Canada too. The drugs that are coming through are at record numbers.”

Mr Trump believes Mexico, which shares a large border with the US is in “trouble”. He added that he wants to “get along with everybody, but … it’s got to it take two to tango”.

After winning the election in November last year, the Republican promised to Mexico, and Canada on the first day in the White House.

Mr Trump wants to sign an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all goods coming from Mexico and Canada in an attempt to force them to stamp out illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the US.

Mexico and Canada are two of the and so there are fears that any new tariff will drive a wedge between them and hike prices for Americans.

In 2023, more than 80% of Mexico’s exports and 75% of Canada’s went to the US.

Mr Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to call for a crackdown on migration and drugs, particularly fentanyl, from Mexico and Canada.

He wrote: “Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. It is time for them to pay a very big price!”

He also went after Chinese officials for failing to follow through on promises to hand down the death penalty for people

While on the campaign trail last year, Mr Trump threatened tariffs as high as 100% for China and Mexico.
