Beyond Paradise star Sally Bretton’s forgotten BBC show role with Kris Marshall

Before became known for playing Martha Lloyd in Beyond Paradise, fans might be surprised to learn she shared the screen with co-star in another beloved series.

Around 15 years ago, Sally played a minor character named Cheryl in a Christmas special called 2039: A Christmas Oddity.

In the episode, the Harpers flash forward to Christmas in 2039, with hilariously exaggerated versions of themselves.

Ben is in his eighties but remains his usual grumpy self, while Susan, thanks to her habit of constantly applying moisturiser, looks exactly the same.

Other family members fare less well: Janey has gained significant weight, Michael is bald but hides it with a wig, and Roger is reduced to a disembodied head in a glass dome after a lion-related mishap.

The special revisits some of the family’s worst Christmas disasters, including chaotic gift exchanges and family feuds.

Fast forward to 2024, and Sally and Kris have been reunited on screen in the hit series Beyond Paradise, but this time as (nearly) husband and wife.

The Death in Paradise spin-off show is set to air a festive special tonight at 9pm on One.

Kris will reprise his role as DI Humphrey Goodman, now solving crimes in the picturesque town of Shipton Abbott, while Sally plays his fiancée, Martha Lloyd.

In the episode Martha and Humphrey will face new challenges at home as they foster a teenager for the first time.

Sally has spoken about the new character Jaiden, saying: “Jaiden is a bit of a challenge at first. Like any typical teenager, he’s glued to his phone and headphones, and it takes him a while to warm up to Martha. She really tries to make a connection with him, but it’s not easy.”

She added: “Handling a teenager presents new challenges, but Martha is determined to make it a special Christmas for Jaiden nonetheless.”
