A Place In the Sun viewers say couple are ‘taking the p***’ with ‘lowball’ offer

viewers have taken to social media to air their thoughts after a couple refused to back down on a “lowball” offer meaning they missed out on a property in Cyprus on the show.

was tasked with helping Maxine and John from Durham find their dream home in the area with a budget of £150,000, which was £50,000 below the average price of the kind of property they were hoping to secure.

They hoped to find a two-bedroom, two-bathroom holiday home near the beach and amenities and admitted they had wiggle room with their budget, saying that for the “perfect” property, they could stretch to £180,000.

At the end of the show they placed an offer on a townhouse with an asking price of £157,000 instructing Jean to bid £140,000 for it. Viewers were not impressed by this even when they raised the offer by £4,000 after their initial approach was rejected.

One fumed: “17k lowball is taking the p*** #aplaceinthesun.” When they increased the offer they added: “Still 13k under offer – can’t have wanted it that much with a 150k budget. Knew they weren’t buying. #aplaceinthesun.”

“Owner actually said F*** RIGHT OFF #aplaceinthesun,” another added. “Vendor wants £155K. John and Maxine offer £144K. Vendor’s response…,” wrote a third posting a GIF of cartoon character Muttley laughing uncontrollably.

Another posted a GIF of a man hitting a button with the word “Decline” on screen writing: “Footage of the vendor. #aplaceinthesun.”

Meanwhile a fifth posted a “No” GIF and simply wrote: “£144k? #aplaceinthesun.”

The couple love the island so much it was the first place they holidayed together after they started seeing each other and they even held their wedding there so it has very fond memories for them.

Before making their initial offer of £140,000 John said: “We’ve decided to go in what we feel is a fair offer of around about 10% under the asking price.” This was rejected by the seller who countered with £155,900 with Jean telling them they felt it was “worth asking price”. However John and Maxine refused to even met them halfway raising their offer to £144,000.

“Our top end would be the £144,000 and possibly leave that on the table…although we love it, we don’t want to be paying more than what we feel it’s worth to us to be honest,” they explained.

Presenting the offer to the seller’s agent Jean added: “Please emphasise one more time to the seller that they are cash buyers, because if it’s not accepted, they’re happy to leave it on the table. It’s their final offer.”

Sadly for the couple the second offer was rejected although Jean told them to remain hopeful. “This [offer] is on the table. If this property doesn’t move in a month the seller’s position changes…so definitely keep an eye on this,” she encouraged them.

A Place In The Sun is on Channel 4 weekdays at 6pm.
