Is ‘The Brutalist’ on streaming? How to watch the award-winning film

“The Brutalist” may be an awards season favorite, but not many people have had the chance to see it.

The epic drama, which just won a Golden Globe for best drama motion picture, is currently only available to view in a handful of theaters in New York City and Los Angeles.

However, it will expand to more cities later this month, and will likely be available to stream later this year.

“The Brutalist” stars Adrien Brody as László Toth, a Hungarian architect who emigrates to the United States after surviving the Holocaust.

On Jan. 5, 2025, Brody won the Golden Globe award for best performance by a male actor in a drama motion picture for his role in “The Brutalist.”

During his acceptance speech, he opened up about the film’s personal significance to him and thanked his father, Elliot Brody, and his mother, Sylvia Plachy, who fled Hungary in the 1950s.

The movie, Brody said, is “reminiscent of my mother’s and my ancestral journey of fleeing the horrors of war and coming to this great country.”

The film also stars Felicity Jones as László’s wife, Erzsébet, as well as Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy and Stacy Martin.

Is ‘The Brutalist’ in movie theaters?

Following its debut at the Venice Film Festival in September, “The Brutalist” opened in select theaters in New York City and Los Angeles on Dec. 20.

On Jan. 9, the drama will open more widely in several cities across the country, showing at select AMC theaters as well as some independent and arthouse cinemas, according to the movie’s official ticketing website.

The film will then release even more widely to more than 2,000 screens later this month after Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 17, A24 recently told Axios.

“The Brutalist,” which has a run time of over three hours, is one of the few films as of recent to include an intermission in theatrical showings.

The 15-minute break, which is included in the film’s run time, was added with theater-goers’ comfort in mind.

“I personally have a hard time sitting still for three-and-a-half hours, so I needed it. And it was a public-facing decision,” director Brady Corbet, who just won a Golden Globe for best director, told IndieWire in December.

When will ‘The Brutalist’ be streaming?

A streaming date for “The Brutalist” has not yet been announced.

When the epic is available for streaming, it will most likely be available to stream on Max.

In 2023, A24, the production and distribution company behind “The Brutalist,” signed a deal to stream A24 movies exclusively on Max, HBO and Cinemax after leaving theaters, Variety reported.

In the past, timings have varied between movies’ theatrical release dates and their premiere on Max.

One recent A24 movie, Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” became available to stream on Max at the end of February 2024, nearly four months after its expanded theatrical release.

On the other hand, another A24 drama, “The Iron Claw,” was released on Max nearly five months after its came out in theaters across the U.S.
