BBC Celebrity Mastermind fans point out show ‘first’ as Jon Kay faces awkward situation

‘s found himself competing against the daughter of one of the stars of his specialist subject on tonight’s edition of Celebrity Mastermind as viewers speculated it was a deliberate move on the part of producers.

The broadcaster picked groundbreaking anarchic 1980s comedy series The Young Ones as his specialist subject. One of the stars of the show was actor Adrian Edmonson and Jon found himself sitting next to his actress daughter Beattie Edmonson, whose specialist subject was US rock band The Strokes.

They were competing alongside singer and actress Suzanne Shaw and comedian Glenn Moore to be crowned champion. Jon got off to a strong start with nine points, however, he was pipped at the post by Beattie who scored 10 in her specialist round.

The irony of the situation didn’t go unnoticed by viewers who took to X to air their views.

“I assume it was done deliberately – to have Ade Edmondson’s daughter on the episode where someone else is answering questions about The Young Ones #CelebrityMastermind,” one commented.

Another asked: “Is this a first? Answering questions about a show featuring the father of one of the contenders? #celebritymastermind.”

“So one of the specialist subjects on #celebritymastermind is a programme starring the dad of one of the other contestants!” a third exclaimed.

As he returned to the famous black chair for the general knowledge round Jon confessed to host he had been inspired to pick the subject after interviewing Adrian Edmonson on Breakfast.

“Little did I know you put me next to young ones royalty here tonight with Beattie here,” he quipped to host Clive.

“I was actually interviewing her dad, Ade, oh, on breakfast. That made me think about doing The Young ones, as my subject.”

Beattie’s father Adrian has also competed on Celebrity Mastermind and won his edition of the show.

She divulged “the trophy is displayed quite prominently – it’s not hidden away.”

Despite a sterling performance she didn’t follow in his footsteps though. Despite lagging behind, Jon pulled it back in the general knowledge round to win the show and the coveted trophy.

“It was weird swapping a red sofa for a black chair – another iconic bit of furniture,” he said following his victory. “Normally I’m asking the questions, I’m not answering the questions. So yeah, it was a bit weird, but this is lovely.”
