Virgin Media could be a cheaper place to get Sky TV this week
If you’re looking to upgrade your speeds or simply want to find a better deal for your internet and TV, there are plenty of bundles on the market. This is when providers offer both broadband and television services together in one monthly payment as part of a contract deal. Although – obviously – offers Sky TV alongside its own internet packages, currently is offering fast internet and Sky TV services that rivals Sky itself.
Virgin Media is having a New Year sale and has caught our eye. Right now, the firm is offering its Biggest Combo bundle for £69 a month, down from the usual £97. This gets you 500Mbps broadband and a Virgin Media Wi-Fi Hub, more than 210 TV channels via Sky Essentials, Netflix Standard with ads, plus all Sky Sports channels and Sky Cinema HD channels.
This is thanks to the combination of services. Getting the basic Sky TV channels plus Sky Sports and Sky Cinema is usually a pricey affair. At the time of writing, if you want Sky Stream TV with Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, Netflix and broadband, – and the internet speeds offered to this writer’s address were only 145Mbps.
That means Virgin’s deal is offering zippier internet and all the add ons for £19 less. Broadband prices and speeds depend on your area, but Virgin’s price was cheaper when we looked – and that’s even with Sky currently offering its Sky Sports add on at a reduced rate of £20 per month. It’s usually £28.
It’s worth noting that the TV services from both providers are delivered differently. The pricier Sky offering is with Sky Stream, so all your TV is delivered over your broadband connection using streaming. Virgin’s cheaper offer gets you internet via Wi-Fi but the TV services are all via its 360 box, which is cable TV. If you don’t have a cable into your home, you’ll have to pay £30 for an engineer visit to install the service.
You might prefer traditional cable to streaming, so make sure you’re getting the service you want to go with.
Sky’s offer is for 24 months, whereas the cheaper Virgin offer at £69 is for 18 months. Virgin also says your price will go up in the 19th month to £169. That’s a big jump, so you may want to consider another deal, or be ready to cancel your package before the price rises.
As with most internet and TV packages, Virgin also states you’ll be subject to a price rise every April starting in April 2025, which increases “by the Retail Price Index rate of inflation announced in February each year plus 3.9%.”
But if you want a bumper broadband and TV deal that nets you fast internet and all the TV services you could want, the Biggest Combo bundle for £69 looks like one of the best in the UK right now.
