As far as the village is concerned, despite its remote location, Coton in the Elms has a rich history.

It was first mentioned over 1,000 years ago in 942 when land was granted to a local noble.

The village also featured in the Domesday Book, listed as “Cotes” and described as a small farming community connected to Burton Abbey.

An old salt route known as Walton Way also runs through the area, linking it to nearby towns like Tamworth and Burton-on-Trent.

At the heart of the village is St Mary’s Church, built in the 1840s after the original fell into disrepair.

The story goes that the old church bells were taken to Lullington, and on a windy day, locals can still hear the distant chimes.

The village green is surrounded by traditional lanes and cottages, and nowadays most residents work in nearby towns, using Coton as a peaceful base away from the hustle and bustle.
