star Leny Yoro was targeted by Liverpool ahead of his move to Old Trafford but ended up with the Red Devils after the 13-time champions shelled out £52million to prise him away from Lille. And reportedly ended their pursuit of the teenager due to the fact he demanded guaranteed game time at Anfield.

Yoro endured a nightmare start to life in Manchester as he suffered a metatarsal injury during the club’s pre-season trip to the USA and was forced to undergo surgery.

He returned to action during United’s trip to at the start of December and has featured in every match since.

Yoro came through the Lille academy and was handed his debut for the club at the age of 16 when he came on as a late substitute in a Ligue 1 victory over Nice in May 2022.

He became a regular in the side last season and had made 60 first team appearances for Lille by the time he completed his move to the .

A host of clubs were interested in landing the centre-back, including the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. And may have come out of the top of a transfer battle if they were willing to give him the promises he desired.

But the Merseyside giants weren’t willing to do that, with already having a plethora of centre-backs to call upon.

Yoro would have been competing with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah if he did link up with the 2020 champions. And the star ultimately decided a move to Old Trafford was in his best interests.

Yoro will be desperate to force his way into ’s starting team, with United shipping 13 goals in their last six outings.

The Red Devils have suffered a dismal campaign and began the weekend in 14th place in the league table after winning just six of their first 19 matches.

Amorim’s men travel to runaway leaders on Sunday afternoon in search of their first top flight win at Anfield since January 2016.

And ahead of the match, Amorim explained: “In football, [in] one game, anything can happen. If you talk about the season, then almost every time the best [team] win. In the moment, they are better than us, but we can win any game. We have to focus not on the context but on the performance.”
