Gardeners’ World presenter and horticulture guru has warned fellow gardeners about taking part in one popular trend.

During a recent interview with the Times, the broadcaster explained his concern about the current vogue amongst that suggests that rewilding will provide a boost in biodiversity.

Unpacking exactly what it is about rewilding that causes an issue, he said: “It reduces biodiversity. If you’re talking about growing only British native plants and only letting what is growing at the moment take over and stay as it is, that will result in a reduction of species, because it’s a survival of the fittest — some plants will outcompete others.”

He added: “You can’t worry about climate change and global warming on the one hand and not be concerned about future-proofing your garden on the other.”

While many gardeners believe that letting the plants in their gardens grow freely will help the overall biodiversity amongst their greenery, Alan actually explained how the reverse will happen and instead gardeners should keep their gardens in order.

Providing further insight into exactly what biodiversity entails, the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) explained:”Biodiversity is all the different kinds of life you’ll find in one area—the variety of animals, plants, fungi, and even microorganisms like bacteria that make up our natural world.

“Each of these species and organisms work together in ecosystems, like an intricate web, to maintain balance and support life. Biodiversity supports everything in nature that we need to survive: food, clean water, medicine, and shelter.”

Continuing in his discussion about the issue, he emphasised how the animals and insects that reside in our gardens are only interested in the food that our plants provide, seeming to suggest that that should be the primary focus when considering what to plant in our undergrowth.

Down the years, Alan has become one of the most respected names in gardening having combined his horticultural knowledge with his broadcasting prowess. But he is perhaps most well-known for being the host of ‘s Gardeners’ World, after having taken over the hosting duties from Geoffrey Smith in 1996 before ending his own spell on the show seven years later.

Such are his achievements in the world of gardening and broadcasting, Alan was awarded a CBE in the new years honors list.
