Weather warnings are in place for much of the UK today as warns of snow and ice causing disruption across the country.

The agency has issued yellow and amber warnings as it warns that Saturday evening will see

But the latest maps from WXCharts show snow primarily hammering the north of England and the Midlands, meaning several cities in the south of the country could avoid the worst of the weather, although rain is likely to take its place if snow doesn’t arrive.

The capital is one such area which might avoid snow, with the most likely to avoid much of the wintery weather conditions.

and Cambridge in the east could also be set to miss most of the snow whilst cities on the south coast such as , and Southampton are unlikely to be widely affected.

Large parts of the south west are not covered by weather warnings, meaning cities such as Exeter and Plymouth could be set to dodge the worst of the weather, although small drops of snow might be seen on Sunday evening.

Chief Forecaster Jason Kelly, said: “This weekend will bring a range of weather hazards to the UK, notable snow accumulations, freezing rain, ice and heavy rain as well as some gusty conditions.

“We have issued a number of severe weather warnings, including Amber warnings for snow and ice in parts of England and Wales.

“Some significant accumulations of snow are possible across parts of Wales, the Midlands and northern England in particular, where 5 cm or more could accumulate fairly widely, with as much as 20-30 cm over high ground of mid and north Wales and potentially 30-40 cm over parts of the Pennines.

“This, accompanied by strengthening winds, may lead to drifting of lying snow.”

forecast for tonight states: “Rain, locally freezing for a time in the west, sleet and snow continues to spread northeastwards into England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Clear spells ahead with an overnight frost.”

For tomorrow (Sunday), the warns the cold temperatures will push northwards, meaning cities in the south are likely to avoid the worst of the weather.

It predicts: “Rain, locally freezing for a time in the west, sleet and snow continues to spread northeastwards into England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Clear spells ahead with an overnight frost.”

The south of England is set to be hit by the worst of the rain however, with as much as 3-5mm per hour falling throughout Sunday.
