Whether it’s or exploring , there’s always something special to discover.

One such gem is the Fen Bridge walk, a one-hour circular route that stretches across the border. 

The three-mile trail takes you through the heart of the Dedham Vale National Landscape, an that once inspired painter John Constable.

Starting at Flatford Bridge, the walk follows the River Stour, winding through farmland and the charming village of Dedham.

Along the way, you’ll find plenty to see, including St Mary the Virgin Church, which dates back to the 1400s, and Southfields, a wool factory with roots in the 1300s. 

Wildlife and livestock are also common sights. One walker described the walk as “beautiful and breathtaking at times,” while another called it a “lovely easy walk along the river.”

The route is popular year-round, though some visitors complained about mud and flooding during the wetter months. 

One person wrote: “Knocked a star off because the river was a little flooded near the beginning.”

Another walker added: “Muddy in some places, quite a big hill, and a very slippery and unstable bridge made from tree branches,” but still gave it a five-star review.

Despite occasional flooding or muddy sections, the walk seems to be a favourite for locals and visitors. 

Many love stopping in Dedham for refreshments, with one reviewer saying: “Dedham is halfway along this loop, so it’s perfect to stop off for food.”

The Fen Bridge walk is an easy trail, making it suitable for families and casual walkers. 

Appropriate footwear is advised, especially in wet conditions, and the peaceful surroundings are best enjoyed during quieter times of the day.
