had a difficult year last year , which he is still undergoing treatment for.

While the monarch, 76, carried out a significant number of engagements last year, the King did have to scale back on some of his work as a result of doctors orders, something he spoke about on his overseas trip to Australia and Samoa just months ago.

However, even if the King was not seen in public as much as usual, this does not mean that work was not going on behind the scenes.

This is because King Charles has one key job that he conducted even when he took a step-back from public-facing duties – checking the famous red box. He does this for every day of the year except for two – Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.

The red boxes contain papers from government ministers in the UK and the Realms and from representatives from the Commonwealth and beyond that the monarch – as Head of State – needs to see.

The documents are sent from the Private Secretary’s Office to The King in a locked red despatch box, regardless of where he is staying at the time or what residence he is in.

It is believed these boxes are sent 363 days of the year, with Queen Elizabeth II famously receiving the red boxes – which were made upon her Coronation in 1953 – almost every day of her reign.

This included weekends and holidays, with Christmas Day being a rare exception.

While the King only has two official days when he doesn’t receive a red box and therefore could have a day away from duty, this is not the case for the monarch, who is still seen in public on both occasions.

This is because on both Easter and Christmas Day, King Charles goes to church and meets the public – something he reportedly very much enjoys doing.

Despite the fact he will be , the monarch is reportedly hoping to conduct more royal engagements, which is set to if he is given the go-ahead from doctors.

Queen Camilla, 77, is likely to accompany him on these overseas trips.
