Canucks: Defence prospect Sawyer Mynio goes from Seattle to Calgary in WHL blockbuster

Mynio, who was a 2023 Canucks third rounder, had two long playoff runs in Seattle and now has a chance for a third with a Calgary team that’s loading up via trade

The West cellar-dwelling Thunderbirids (12-22-2-1) received four WHL draft selections — including first rounders in both 2025 and 2026 — as well as defenceman Linden Burrett, 18, and forward Sawyer Mayes, 17, from the East third-place Hitmen (20-11-3-1) for Mynio. Seattle also gets fourth rounders in both 2025 and 2026.

“We have acquired one of the top defenceman in the Western Hockey League who contributes a vast amount of experience both in the regular season, playoffs, and internationally,” Calgary general Manager Garry Davidson said in a news release. “Acquiring players of this magnitude requires a club to give up a lot, including two young quality players who we wish all the best to in Seattle.”

Mynio missed time with Seattle with an injury earlier this season. He put up five goals and 19 points in 18 games with the Thunderbirds. He had 16 goals and 53 points in 63 regular season games with Seattle last year. He has 40 WHL playoff games on his resumé, along with five Memorial Cup games.

This is the second marquee trade for the Hitmen in three days. They added 20-year-old goalie Daniel Hauser from the Wenatchee Wild on Thursday, parting with the rights to three players and two draft picks.
