fans were left unimpressed as they tuned in to watch the latest edition of Newswatch on Saturday January 4, the first of 2025.
As Samira Ahmed told viewers: “Welcome to the first Newswatch of 2025,” she then addressed backlash of News’ reporting of the New Orleans attack, sharing a phone call from a disgruntled viewer, who accused them of sharing too much coverage.
She then addressed the ‘s reporting on the plane crash in South Korea, as they had received complaints about the families of the victims being interviewed at the site.
As Samira then moved onto Gavin and Stacey, viewers took to social media to share their fury about the segment.
One fan said: “Oh great, #Newswatch. Time to hear how no critique of the #bbcnews is valid and the # is always right. It. Is. A. Complete. Waste. Of. Airtime.”

Another agreed: “Samira Ahmed is back to tell us what we already know. @BBCNews is awful, it’s been run into the ground by Tim Davie and Robbie Gibb. Tabloid news at best,” as they added: “Newsnight has had its budget slashed and decent journalists have left after years of service.”
A third chimed in: ” News watch? About as useful as telling you how to pack your Christmas decorations away.”
A fourth swiped: “Click is well worth the licence fee, said nobody ever,” as one fan replied: “Same goes for newswatch.”
A sixth sniped: “The are absolutely useless. They should be embarrassed. You can see why so many people are switching them off.”

Newswatch has been on the since 2004, and was first presented by Raymond Snoddy, before Samira took over in 2013. It was launched in response to the Hutton Inquiry, in a bid to make News more accountable for their reporting.
Meanwhile, viewers also had complaints for the amount of coverage the latest cold snap has received, as temperatures are set to plummet below 0 degrees celsius and snow has been forecast.
One viewer said: “Second day in a row with snow headlines. There hasn’t even been any yet,” as another agreed: “Give it a rest it might snow it might rain it might freeze!! It is bloody winter for godsake #scaremongering.”
