With gleaming new hotels, a burgeoning international food scene, and pristine, litter-free streets, Kigali is now luring travelers seeking a blend of sophistication and safety in the heart of Africa.

Rwanda, dubbed the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” has transformed its global image, bolstered by the World Economic Forum ranking it the ninth-safest nation in the world, and the safest in Africa this year.

Kigali’s rise as a luxury hotspot marks a dramatic shift for Rwanda, a country once known for its tragic history.

Belise Kariza, chief tourism officer at the Rwanda Development Board, said: “Kigali is the epicentre of the land of a thousand hills and rapidly becoming the tourism and business hub for the region.”

Leading the luxury transformation are international hotel giants Radisson Blu and Marriott, both of which launched flagship properties in 2016.

The Radisson Blu complex features a 292-room luxury hotel and the iconic Kigali Convention Centre, whose egg-shaped glass-and-steel design has become a city landmark.

Just months later, Marriott unveiled its first sub-Saharan African property on the opposite side of the city.

These entries have intensified competition in a market previously led by the Serena Hotel and the historic Hotel des Milles Collines, famous for its portrayal in the film Hotel Rwanda.

New players like the Ubumwe Grande Hotel, The Manor, and Swiss International’s Villa Portofino have added to the city’s upscale appeal.

Kigali’s luxury evolution isn’t limited to accommodations.

The city has cultivated a vibrant dining and nightlife scene.

Repub Lounge, perched above the city’s sparkling lights, serves up local favorites like liboke chicken and beef brochettes paired with Virunga beer.

Pili Pili, an urban lounge with breathtaking views and a turquoise pool, offers bistro-style fare in a chic party atmosphere.

Sushi enthusiasts can choose between terrace-style Sakae or authentic Kiseki, while Italian cuisine lovers can indulge at Sol E Luna or Brachetto. Kigali’s culinary options now rival those of global capitals, making it a magnet for foodies.
