Sheridan Smith has broken her silence on the much-anticipated return to the final episode of . The beloved sitcom made a triumphant comeback on Christmas Day.
Penned by and Ruth Jones, who also star in the series, Gavin and Stacey originally aired from 2007 to 2010. It narrates the long-distance romance between Stacey West and Gavin Shipman, portrayed by Joanna Page and Mathew Horne.
After a nine-year hiatus, the show returned with a bang in 2019 for a Christmas special that boasted the highest overnight Christmas ratings since 2008.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that James and Ruth, who play Neil ‘Smithy’ Smith and Vanessa ‘Nessa’ Jenkins, had teamed up once more to craft the final episode of the popular series.
The grand finale, which aired on Christmas Day (December 25) on One, unfolded in both Billericay, Essex, and Barry, South Wales.
Here, the families of Stacey and her husband Gavin were gearing up for a wedding presumably between Smithy and Nessa, following her proposal during the 2019 Christmas special.
However, viewers were initially let down to learn that the wedding was between Smithy and Sonia his girlfriend from the 2019 Christmas Day episode played by Laura Aikman. It transpired that Nessa’s earlier proposal was interrupted before Smithy could respond, and the matter was never broached again, reports .

On the wedding day, just as the ceremony reaches its climax, best man and ring bearer Gavin reveals to Smithy that he is making a grave mistake by marrying Sonia. As multiple guests, including Neil the Baby, stand up to object, Smithy finally confesses his true feelings, leaving Sonia at the altar.
The wedding scenes notably marked the return of Sheridan as Smithy’s sister Rudi, who was in attendance with her children – Chingford, Taplow, Brighton, and Aldi.
This brief yet welcomed comeback was shared alongside Pam Ferris, reprising her role as Cath Smith, the mother of Smithy and Rudi.

Taking to , Sheridan posted a clip of her appearance in the finale, saying: “What a privilege to be part of a show that will go down in history! Happy new year to you all!” Her fans were quick to respond with delight.
