The Met Office has issued amber warnings for snow.
The Met Office has issued two for and ice over almost all of England this weekend.
The warnings cover much of the north of England and the Midlands, and the said that 3-7cm of snow was possible in large areas with as much as 15-30cm of snow falling in higher ground of Wales and the southern Pennines.
The amber warnings are in place from 6pm Saturday 4 until midnight Sunday 5.
forecaster added: ” Snow will become persistent and locally heavy as it pushes south to north across the warning area.
“As well as snow, a period of freezing rain is also likely bringing some hazardous travel conditions before milder air follows across all areas by Sunday morning.”
The warns there is a ‘good chance’ of power cuts, with the potential to affect other services too, such as mobile phone coverage. To prepare for any power outages, gather torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.
Their advice states it would be safer to not drive in these conditions, but if you need to make an essential journey, consider alternative forms of transport.
Delays to travel will be likely with some road closures and longer journey times possible – delays and cancellations can also be expected across bus, rail and air travel.
The forecaster says “there is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off”, with “untreated pavements and cycle paths likely to be impassable”.
If you become isolated due to the snow or ice, the says: “Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night; turn off electrical heaters and put out your fire before going to bed; ensure pets are safe by keeping them warm and comfortable; prevent frozen pipes by opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing [and] stay indoors, wrap up warm and close internal doors to keep the heat in.”
