While most drivers pride themselves on their knowledge of the road, not everyone is familiar with every road sign, as one instructor has highlighted.

Annie Winterburn has taken to to shine a light on a common sign that stumps many motorists. Despite its apparent simplicity, it seems this one particular traffic warning is widely misunderstood.

In her tutorial, Annie explains: “You know that it’s warning you – it’s warning you about a steep hill, but is it a steep hill up or is it a steep hill down? Well, read the number 20 and look at the zero.

“Is that zero higher up than the two or is it lower down than the two? You can see that the zero is higher up, so that number 20 is going upwards, so it’s warning you about a steep, uphill slope.

“Practice your road signs because it’s the biggest theory test topic. There are more questions about road signs than any other topic.”

Don’t miss…

The video of Annie explaining how to decipher the steep incline sign has seen a surge of views as she teaches drivers how to tell if it warns of an ascent or descent. Since uploaded, the explainer has struck a chord with viewers, managing to clear the confusion for many.

One social media user expressed their gratitude, saying: “Thank you. This is VERY helpful, as I kept getting confused with this one.” Another chimed in with praise, adding: “Really well explained.”

The importance of understanding road signs while driving cannot be overstated. They are vital for the safety of all road users, including both drivers and pedestrians.

Road signs not only inform drivers of permissible actions but also clearly indicate prohibited ones, alongside offering useful information about the surrounding locality.
