Cold weather maps show when a 697-mile snow bomb hammers UK in -10C big freeze

A huge 697-mile is likely to hammer with temperature level plummeting to freezing -10C according to new weather maps.

have turned white and purple – meaning snow – for everywhere from Wick in the northern tip of Scotland to Southhampton on the southern coast on Friday, January 17. The area from Wick to Southhampton covers 697 miles – meaning much of the country will be blated by snowy weather.

The extreme weather is likely to impact the areas around Inverness and Aberdeen the most with chances of snow upto 2-3cm per hour, maps show.

However, the lowest temperature would be experienced in areas around Newcastle and Manchester with mercury level falling as low as -10C.

Meanwhile areas in Scotland – such as Inverness, Wick, Portree and Fort William – are likely to see temperatures oscillating beteween -5C to -3C.

It comes as the for various parts of the UK for this weekend.

chief forecaster Jason Kelly, said: “This weekend will bring a range of weather hazards to the UK, notable snow accumulations, freezing rain, ice and heavy rain as well as some gusty conditions.”

A number of severe weather warnings, including Amber warnings for snow and ice have been issued in parts of England and Wales.

He said: “Some significant accumulations of snow are possible across parts of Wales, the Midlands and northern England in particular, where 5 cm or more could accumulate fairly widely, with as much as 20-30 cm over high ground of mid and north Wales and potentially 30-40 cm over parts of the Pennines. This, accompanied by strengthening winds, may lead to drifting of lying snow.”

Snow is predicted to accumulate through the evening and into Sunday before turning to rain in central and southern areas of England.

Snow in northern England will continue to fall, where some significant accumulations could develop through Sunday.

The ’s long-range forecast between January 17 and 31 said: “Slowly-evolving weather patterns look most likely through the second half of January, with high pressure often in the vicinity of the UK, although the flavour of the weather we experience depends on where the high and low pressure centres are relative to the UK.”

The forecast said that there are “currently no strong signals for prolonged cold” but spells of cold weather are likely, with predictions of frost, fog, and wintry showers.

It added: “Pulses of more unsettled weather are more likely across the south than the north, and may bring milder conditions for a time too.”
