The cold weather over January means historic vehicles purchased as second cars are on the clock. 

It’s possible that many models are simply stored away over the winter with the classics then re-merging come the spring and summer. 

Leaving a model safely stored out of harm’s way may appear a good way to keep cars in top condition. 

However, motorists may not be aware that leaving models , forcing owners into repairs later down the line.

Instead, those with classic cars are urged to regularly check up on their vehicles and even turn on the ignition to clear out the system once in a while.

Previously speaking to , Mike said: “If you’ve got a classic car, now’s the time to talk about this coming into winter. 

“Lots of people will take their classic cars and tuck them away in the garage and forget about them until the spring. 

“You should regularly go down to your car once a month and sit in it and start it up and just let the engine get up to temperature and let it cool down again.”

stressed road users should make sure cars are warmed up to the right temperature to get “the fluids circulated and warm”,

However, motorists following this tip must make sure they are leaving the engine running for enough time. 

Switching the car on for just a few minutes is likely to cause even more damage due to the impact of moisture. 

Classic car experts at stressed that a “fair amount of moisture” will condense out of the exhaust on start-up with this eventually vaporised by heat over time. 

They explained: “You don’t want to start it, run it for five minutes, and then put it away, as that can leave moisture in the exhaust that could rot it out from the inside. 

“So be sure to run the car for about 15 minutes before putting it away. If water is still dripping from the tailpipe, drive it a bit longer.”
