The UK (FCDO) has issued a stark warning to British travellers about a potential terror threat in a popular tourist spot.

Visitors headed to are being warned of likelihood of attacks targeting popular tourist hotspots such as beaches, bars, and restaurants.

An updated advisory on November 14 urged travellers to remain vigilant, avoid crowded public places, and stay informed through local media.

The said: “Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Sri Lanka. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times, and follow the advice of local authorities.”

The advisory is part of a broader update reflecting heightened global tensions linked to the ongoing conflict between and Palestine.

According to the FCDO, terrorist groups such as Al-Qaida and Daesh have called on their supporters to carry out attacks in response to the conflict, potentially targeting communities and interests associated with Jewish, Muslim, Israeli, or allied nations.

The FCDO’s statement added: “There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets.”

Travellers were encouraged to review the UK Counter Terrorism Policing’s guidance on staying safe abroad and preparing for possible terrorist incidents.

The warning comes against the backdrop of Sri Lanka’s history of terrorist attacks, including the devastating Easter Sunday bombings in 2019.

These coordinated attacks targeted three churches and three luxury hotels in Colombo, Negombo, and Batticaloa, claiming over 250 lives, including eight British nationals.
