Celebrating 50 years of the local indie music scene’s most dedicated fan and vinyl-record squirrel, the Zuk Till You Puke gig splashes into The Aviary Saturday!
The lineup coming out to tip their hats to Chris Zuk is appropriately dynamite, including classic punk Cutoffs, legendary “geezers of trash” The Brewtals, a too-rare emergence of Whitey Houston, the beautifully terrifying Half Dead and good ol’ LushClot spilling out into the crowd.
“He’s a bit of a scene unicorn, an enigma, and Earth’s biggest music lover all wrapped into one quiet sweetheart of a guy,” notes local musician Lyle Bell of Overdrive ii Oblivion, The Wet Secrets, Whitey Houston and a dozen other bands going way back to the Mollys Reach era.
“Bands may come and go but there is always Zuk,” says Bell, “the Alpha and the Omega.
“As a grizzled scene vet, it is a badge of honour to scan the venue and see Zuk in the back with his minidisc recorder, eternal leather jacket — forged in the fires of Mt. Doom — signature glasses.
“As Freecloud Record’s Rich Liukko once yelled, ‘Don’t make this about you maaaan,’ and it’s not. It’s about Zuk — and puking perhaps!”
This is going to be a very, very memorable night of Edmonton music, with a special birthday cake and lots of pops, wobby and otherwise.
I caught their test launch out at Mossy Trails before the snow fell, and we’re sure in for a treat here, too, including comedian Craig Martell hosting and the terrific Paint Drying as the opening rockers.
One more Aviary gig, as Rocky Mann of LushClot also fronts Midnight Peg, another must-see.
Bridgeland, Panic Pixie and Petrichord open this Thursday night special, $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
See you at all these three to very much see!
