Michael van Gerwen with his wife of 10 years, Daphne
After a couple of lean years, at least by his high standards, has rediscovered his brilliant best at the . The Green Machine is just two wins away from claiming a fourth PDC world title and his first in six years.
Standing in his way are semi-final opponent Chris Dobey and potentially or Stephen Bunting. A Van Gerwen vs Littler meeting would, in the eyes of many fans, be a dream final – the best of his era against the biggest star in the game today. The Dutchman, now 35, remains the youngest player to win the PDC World Championship, taking his first in 2014 at the age of 24.
Littler, 17, incredibly, could have another seven chances to beat that record. But whether Van Gerwen lifts the Sid Waddell Trophy again or not, he will go down as one of the greats of the game. In the view of many, he is the second-best of all time after Phil Taylor – and it’s afforded him a comfortable life away from the oche.

“My upper jaw, they are going to take it six millimetres forward and my lower jaw they are going to put back just three millimetres. I have a big underbite, a penny bowl, as they call it. That bothers me a lot anyway with eating.
“Your teeth also wear down and you snore more because of it. I’m looking forward to it. I can’t bite through a slice of ham yet. You get fed up with that at some point. After this, I hope to put a stop to all the physical ailments.”
