Arsenal have reminded fans of a VAR trial in place during their Carabao Cup clash next week
Arsenal have released a statement after it was confirmed that their Carabao Cup clash with will be used to trial in-stadium VAR announcements.
The club reminded fans: “The two matches against the Magpies will see the use of the video assistant referee for the first time during our run in this season’s competition, which is the usual policy for cup semi-finals and finals where all the two teams already have the technology in place for matches.
“However, there will be a twist starting with our home leg at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, January 7 as the EFL are trialling a new system of allowing the officials to explain their decisions over the stadium’s PA system.
“Referees will announce the final decision following a visit to the pitchside monitor, or upon the conclusion of factual matters such as accidental handball by a goalscorer or offside judgements. Only the final decision will be announced in the stadium, not the full conversation between the on-field referee and VAR.
“This pilot marks the first time referees will talk to the supporters in the stadium and those watching on TV here in the UK, but the system has been used in tournaments such as the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, aiming to provide better clarity and understanding around key decisions.”
