UK snow warning as Britain prepares for 10-day Arctic blast this New Year

Britain could be brace for a potential 10-day Ice Age of snow and ice predicted to grip the country for the start of 2025.

New weather and settling across the nation from the far north of Scotland to as far south as the Home Counties and Devon until January 9, and maybe beyond.

The Arctic conditions are expected to begin in the next 24 hours and hold the nation in their grasp, with temperatures dropping well below zero for days.

“This is looking like unfolding into an extended wintry period, with snow and ice events becoming more universal across the UK over the first 10 days of January, quite possibly longer.”

Mr Dale explained that the snow and ice were being drawn across the UK by several weather patterns, adding: “A major storm crosses west to east on New Year’s Day; behind it Arctic air from the north.

“Next few days, the air emanates from a perishing Scandinavia, gradually moving southwards.

“Then over the next three to seven days, new Atlantic low-pressure systems collide with the cold air in situ over the UK, hence the southern snow.”

The cold weather is already affecting transport, with ferries and trains disrupted. The has issued snow, rain, and wind warnings.

Almost every part of the country is covered by at least one of the multiple weather warnings issued by the between Monday and Wednesday.

Scotland is being hit first by “fairly persistent rain” and snow, with 50-70mm of rainfall expected widely, 100-140mm in some locations, and up to 20cm of snow in places, with a warning in place until midnight on New Year’s Eve, the forecaster said.

Ferry routes in Scotland were already disrupted on Monday, while rail lines, including the Highland Main Line at Kingussie, were affected.

An amber warning has been issued for parts of Scotland between midnight and 5pm on New Year’s Eve, indicating that heavy rain is likely to cause property flooding and some travel disruption.

A yellow warning for “persistent snow” has been issued, likely to cause road disruption in Orkney and Shetland from 5am until midnight on Tuesday.

spokesman Oli Claydon said: “That rain will cause pretty severe weather over the next 48 hours.”

Today:

It remains wet in Scotland, with snow possibly in some places. Plenty of clouds are elsewhere, with patchy light rain in the west and some brighter breaks in the south. Becoming windier, especially across the Pennines. Mild for most of the time of year.

Tonight:

Rain and snow, often heavy, remain across central and northern Scotland. It is dryer further south, with some clearer spells but widely windy.

Tuesday:

Heavy rain continues across Scotland, with snow in places. Rain spreads southwards into Northern Ireland and Northern England. Strong winds with gales to severe gales around coasts and hills.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Further unsettled weather to come, with frequent heavy showers and strong winds into New Year’s Day. Turning colder from Thursday, with blustery, perhaps wintry, showers.
