Sophie Ellis-Bextor addressed the ‘feud’ between her and Victoria Beckham
Singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor has addressed a ‘feud’ with Victoria Beckham that dates back nearly 25 years.
Tensions between the two reportedly flared as they went head-to-head for the top spot in the UK charts in 2000, and Murder on the Dancefloor Sophie has now admitted that she felt ‘unnerved’ by one apsect of the showbiz saga.
Sophie has set records straight as she talked to AnOther Magazine about the headline hitting feud with : “As I’m sure you would probably imagine there wasn’t anything real going on behind the scenes. And we did a show together around the time that Groovejet came out, actually. I went and knocked on her door and we had a little chat.”

She sought to pour cold water on the historic rumours about supposed tensions with the Spice Girls star “She is someone that is very savvy as to how the press work and I was the one that was more unnerved by the scale of it.”
Earlier this year Sophie also looked back to the chart battle that gripped music fans around the country, as she told Gabby Logan’s Mid Point podcast: “Some of it was about genre; this was at a time when house music was just crossing over to being commercial. Her track was a garage track and Groove Jet was a house track; that’s like Ibiza, Ayia Napa.”
Rumours of a ‘feud’ between the pair were initially sparked in 2000, when, after both had embarked on solo careers, Sophie released Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love) while Victoria put out her popular Out of Your Mind’, with both songs competing eagerly to gain top spot. In the closely fought race to the top the charts, it was Sophie that came out victorious.

Sophie and her much-loved tracks will appear front and center on One’s celebrations later this evening. She hosts Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s New Year’s Eve Disco at 11.30pm as 2024 comes to an end.
